Evernote

Whether you want to take a quick note, prepare a short list or write a lengthy research paper, Evernote will make it easy for you to collect your ideas and compile them into a completed project. The program allows you to use various methods of collecting information digitally. You can basically 'dump' any kind of information in any format and access it wherever you have Internet access.

Using Evernote

Evernote features a fairly straight forward graphical user interface with self-explanatory menus. We could make notebooks with two folder levels, which helped us stay organized without having too much or too little information. We could not create more sub-folders within the sub-folders of parent folders.

We configured a default folder where content went automatically unless we specified the exact folders to send them to. We later retrieved, reviewed and filed them in appropriate locations.

We got content into Evernote in different ways. When we wanted to type new content, we first selected the folder where we wanted to store the information and then clicked on the New Note button. We typed its title and then typed what we wanted on the pane below it. The editor allowed us to format the text as we wanted and add other features like checklists and tables. We also inserted documents, which retained their original formatting. The program even allowed us to record voice notes.

We also sent an email to add content directly to a specified folder. We specified the folder by typing @ followed by the folder's name at the end of the subject. Evernote assigned us a unique email address that we could use to add content.

My Family Tree

Are you studying your family history or conducting any type of genealogical research? Then My Family Tree will make your work easier. The free genealogy software is specially designed to help users create their family trees quickly whether they are experienced genealogists or novices who are just starting out in the field.

Using My Family Tree

My Family Tree featured a simple and intuitive graphical user interface that made it easy to enter and visualize various details for different family members. The free genealogy software allowed us to view the details in a variety of formats depending on the details we wanted to focus on.

We could easily start creating a family tree from scratch or import existing data in GEDCOM format. The program enabled us to include different details about the family members we added, such as their relationships, genetics, stories, pictures, audio, video and other general attachments.

We could add even more information in the 'Details' section, including names, description, dates of birth and death where applicable, confirmation date, nationality, education, title and social security number among others.

The software allowed us to specify further details in given parts. For example, we could specify different types of relationships such as former or current spouse and natural, foster or adopted child. There was an 'Unrelated' option where we could add people like witnesses or friends.

We could add photos from different sources, including scanners and then perform basic editing functions like rotating and turning to sepia.

My Family Tree gave us different configuration options. For example, we could display only immediate family members, those born after a given date or all generations. We could also display only the story about a particular family member. Other options allowed us to hide family members like siblings, ancestors and descendants as well as details like dates, genders and pictures.

The Statistics feature allowed us to get in-depth information about family members. When considering marriage alone, for instance, we could see the number of marriages, ages at first marriage and the years of marriage. The statistics window had several tabs that displayed different interesting facts and charts. The Summary tab allowed us to see at a glance the respective numbers of different details such as the number of people, generations and total recorded events.

My Family Tree included different tools. For example, the Relationship Calculator allowed us to determine the relationship between any two family members, and we could swap the results to determine how each related to the other.

We could save our details in PDF or image format. Alternatively, we could print them in the form of a large multi-page tiled chart.
